My Poverty is Better than Yours

They both awoke on a damp cold floor
Empty belly, empty pockets, they knew they were poor
The first boy used to pretend he was ill
To avoid hearing the shrill of the school bell
He watched cartoons while his mom was in the other room
Smoking pipes and heating up kitchen spoons
He didn’t mind he had the time to make his own rules
Pretending smoke in home was from monster...
